rivers form from water moving from a higher elevation to a lower elevation through gravity (so essentially, gravity is 'pulling' the water down to a lower elevation.) also, the water weathers away at any soil or rocks that may be around it or in it's 'way' and those form creeks then most of them merge with streams to create rivers.
