1. mutation of normal cells - something has to lead to cancer developing
2. tumor growth - there are more and more tumorous cells 
3. invasion of tissues - more and more tissues and organs become infected
4. metastasis - the formation of new tumors
5. metastatic tumor

That would be a working theory.
