Although both are similar because they are a portion of water surrounded by land, they have particularities. In terms of size, lakes are larger than ponds. Analyzing the geographical formation, the lakes are formed by relief transformations. Ponds, on the other hand, may be formed by occasional episodes, such as a recent landslide, or they may be artificially formed.
