What physical and behavioral adaptations does the black-tailed jackrabbit have that it survive in the chaparral biome?

Chaparral biome can be found in most of the continents including the west coast of United States, South America, the western tip of Australia and coastal areas of the Mediterranean. It is characterized by hot and dry climatic conditions. Fires and drought are very common in this biome.  

Jackrabbits are not actually rabbits but they are hares. They are  native species of deserts and scrublands. These have long leg and ears also exhibit fur on their body. They have developed several adaptations which keeps them cool in the desert or chaparral biome.  

Physical adaptations:

Ears: These animals exhibit long ears. The skin of the ears is thin and containing numerous blood vessels. As, the temperature rises they regulate the body temperature by dispensing heat from the ears, which provides cooling to the body.  

Feet and fur: They exhibit feet covered with fur so as to protect themselves from the hot desert sand.  

Water conservation: These animals survive under scarcity of water in desert or chaparral biome by water retaining adaptation. After their food have been digested they eat their feces. In this way they eat their food twice and and retains the moisture. These animals eat cactus, leaves,grasses and twigs to obtain water.  

Behavioral adaptations:  

These animals keep themselves protected against the hot climatic conditions. They exhibit nocturnal nature, which means they perform their activities like searching food, mating and others in night. In day they remain hidden in shady areas such as tall trees and shallow burrows.
