Is a nail holding two pieces of wood together desirable or non desirable?

This is my opinion: I think two pieces of wood held together by nail is non desirable because I highly doubt that one nail can support enough unless the woods are shaped a certain way and is put together tightly that it won't go apart and has nail that supports it.
