The pancreas produces two important hormones in regulating the blood glucose (sugar) rate: insulin and glucagon.

Insulin facilitates the entry of glucose into cells (where it will be used for energy production) and storage in the liver as glycogen. It removes excess glucose from the blood, sending it into the cells or liver. This occurs shortly after meals when the blood sugar rises. Lack or low insulin production causes diabetes, a disease characterized by excess blood glucose (hyperglycemia).

Glucagon works in the opposite way to insulin. When the body is left without food for many hours, the blood sugar level drops a lot and the person may have hypoglycemia, which gives the sensation of weakness, dizziness and may even faint. When hypoglycemia occurs, the pancreas produces glucagon, which acts on the liver, stimulating it to “break down” glycogen into glucose molecules. The glucose is then sent to the blood, normalizing the sugar rate.
