Addition of large amounts of salt to soil in which plants are growing kills the plants. explain

If a plant is in a salt solution, the plant's cells with be hypotonic to the salty outside. 
This will cause water to flow out of the plant cells, which makes the cells shrivel. 

In most cases, the plant will actively bring salt ions into its cells to try and even out the concentration gradient. However, the energy they spend bringing in ions would otherwise be used to grow. Therefore, the plant will have a slow growth rate. 

So best case scenario, the plant is shorter than normal. Worst case scenario, the plant dies (if it is unable to negate the concentration gradient and keeps losing water).
