Why are nonrenewable resources used even when renewable resources might be available?

Nonrenewable resources are resources that do not renew themselves and their use is not sustainable because their formation takes billions of years. Example for nonrenewable resources are fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, coal). These resources are used to produce energy, and this energy is called nonrenewable energy. The use of these resources increases global warming. However, they are used even when renewable resources are available because of the fact that the human can control them and the production of energy. This is not the case with the renewable resources (wind, sun, water). The renewables rely on the weather and are less predictable. 
Also it needs a much longer time to generate the same quantity of energy as fossil fuels.
