Some marine scientists are concerned that the warming of oceans due to climate change could result in the release of immense amounts of natural gas contained in a substance called methane hydrates. methane hydrates are kept in sediments deep in the ocean by the cold temperature and high pressure. what is the primary reason to be concerned about this?

methane is a greenhouse gas, so its release would likely increase global warming.

methane is toxic to marine organisms and would damage the ecosystem if released by killing species.

this would lead to massive pollution of drinking water.

we want to extract and use this gas as a fuel source, but it would be lost to the environment through this process.
