In an upward growth , the development of a city progresses only in vertical direction and rest all its components remain undisturbed. While in case of Urban sprawl , there is no limitisation in the direction of expansion and thus the city grows  vertically, horizontally and sometimes in the random haphazard direction. The lower the extent of growth the lower will be the violations of building regulations.
