Most starch digestion and breakdown of disaccharides occurs in the SMALL INTESTINES. About ninety percent of the food that we eat are digested and absorbed at the small intestines. The remaining ten percent of digestion occurs in the stomach and the large intestines. The principal function of the small intestines is to absorb nutrients and minerals from food and send them to the blood stream.
