Compare and contrast mitosis and meiosis.

Mitosis makes body cells including the skin cells, and the stomach cells. The stage Mitosis goes through is Prophase Metaphase Anaphase telophase. Both Have diploid 2n (2 sets of chromosomes) 1 set of 23 chromosomes from mom and 1 set of 23 chromosomes from dad. Meiosis makes gametes including the egg cells, and the sperm cells.  Meiosis goes through the stage twice. The stage Meiosis goes through is Prophase Metaphase Anaphase telophase Prophase Metaphase Anaphase telophase. Prophase in Mitosis is where all the chromosomes are visible and they are condensing. Prophase 1 in Meiosis is where the chromosomes are matching up with their homologous pairs. This means that  the chromosomes are approximately the same size and they contain the same type of genes in the same location. One came from mom and one came from dad. In Prophase 1 the chromosomes can transfer their genetic information and exchange it between each other. Metaphase in Mitosis is where the nuclear membrane already broken down in the previous stage. For metaphase in this stage the chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell in a single file line. Metaphase 1 in meiosis is where the chromosomes are in the middle as well, but they are still going to be in pairs in the middle of the cell. Anaphase in Mitosis is where the chromatids are pulled aways by the work of the spindles. They are moving to the opposite sides of the cell. Anaphase 1 in Meiosis is where the chromosomes are pulled away to the opposite sides of the cell. Telophase in Mitosis and telophase 1 in Meiosis where the chromosomes are at the complete opposite ends and a new nuclei are forming on each side to make too new cells. They are both starting to surround the chromosomes on both sides as this will eventually form two cells. Cytokinesis follows to split the cytoplasm to complete the actual dividing of the cell. At the end of mitosis and cytokinesis we end with two identical, diploid cells. Prophase 2 on Meiosis is where chromosomes condensing in both cells.Metaphase 2 on meiosis is where the chromosomes are in a single file line. Anaphase 2 on meiosis is where the chromatids are getting pulled away. Telophase 2 on meiosis is where the chromosomes are at the complete opposite ends and new nuclei are forming on each side to make new cells. Cytokinesis will follow meiosis 2 to completely split the cytoplasm. At the end of Meiosis 2 we end with four non-identical cells and gametes.
