It would be crucial to know what controls the numbers and types of species in an ecosystem so that the certain species doesn't overpopulate or go extinct.  Extinction of that certain species could result in a lot of other animals dying or going extinct because that species was their prey.  Another downside of their extinction is that their prey (the certain animal that went extinct's prey) would overpopulate because they no longer have predators which subdue them.
