In the genetic screens for cell death phenotypes in C. elegans, the Horvitz lab discovered many of the proteins involved in the intrinsic apoptosis pathway (e. g., CED-3, CED-4, etc). One protein that did not appear in this screen, or any subsequent screen, was cytochrome c. Why do you suppose that cytochrome c mutants have never been discovered in apoptosis screens
