Why are grasses found in grasslands and not forests?

I think an enables them to survive the fires that commonly occur in the dry, hot climate of grasslands. A dditionally, why do grasses succeed in grasslands and not forests? In many natural areas that are considered grasslands, the reason trees do not grow is because the native wildlife kills the trees.
