Primary succession begins on a newly exposed surface

while secondary succession begins on soil.

Primary succession basically takes place on "lifeless" areas as result of a disturbance for example, Glaciers and lava flow from valcanos.

Secondary succesion begins from things such as forest fires or an abandon field.
