1. Certain species of birds will only respond to species-specific mating calls.

2. Mules are the result of a cross between a female horse (64 chromosomes) and a male donkey (62 chromosomes). Because mules have 63 chromosomes nearly all known records of mules are infertile.

3. Fruit flies of one species prefer to court and mate on mangoes, but fruit flies of another species prefer to court and mate on bananas.

4. Frogs live in the same pond, but breed in different seasons (summer vs. spring).

5. A new highway separates two populations of mice from each other. Over time these groups evolve into two different species.

6. Lions live in the grasslands and tigers live in the forest.

7. Norway rats and black rats are very similar. Attempts to cross the two species have led to pups being born, but they die within hours.

8. Certain flower species have petals that are too small for large bees species to land on, other flowers have pollen that small bees species can't reach. Because of this, bees do not cross-pollinate the flower species.

9. A species of flower blooms in the early morning while a similar flower blooms in late afternoon. As a result, hybrids are rarely encountered.

10. In snails, reproductive parts will only align if the male and female have shells that spiral in the same direction.
