Fuentes’ book presents three major myths he wants to challenge. They can basically be summarized as: 1) humans races are real; 2) humans are inherently violent; and 3) men and women are fundamentally different and what different things in nearly all aspects of life. In the preface of the book, Fuentes says that these three major myths are important to deconstruct because they “have a negative impact on our society and inhibit an accurate understanding of what it means to be human. These myths create a false set of societally accepted “truths” that in turn cause a range of problems for us” (2012: ix). Fuentes also states that busting these myths is hard work, both academically, but also in facing ourselves and our role in believing and perpetuating these myths. For this discussion, I’d like you to reflect on your own life and comment whether or not you’ve ever believed these myths. I’ll freely admit, I used to believe some of these before entering university – they are indeed commonplace in our society. So please note I’m not here to judge you, I simply want you to reflect on these myths, how you came to believe them (or not, in some cases), and so forth.
