-Foreground aquarium plants are ideally aquatic plants that are placed at the base of a hardscape layout, near the midground area. Alternatively, foreground aquarium plants are also referred to as carpeting plants.(small close to the ground usually bushes or small plants.(weigela, moss)

- Midground aquarium plants are ideally aquatic plants that are placed in the midground at a medium height of a hardscape layout. These plants really help to fill in the central focal point of a planted tank.(Medium size plants(sunflower) or small trees(new oak tree))

- A background plant is a type of plant that provides a backdrop for smaller plants. A hedge can be a type of background plant design, if the hedge is lined with smaller flowers.(huge 200+ old trees dominating the forest)
