Bacteria usually contains a genetic unit called operon which consists of a promoter, operator and all the functional genes that will be coded by a single mRNA. A novel operon has been discovered in a newly found bacteria, called operon X which is transcribed when the bacterium has a deficiency for a novel protein called protein Y. The operon works by directing for the production of protein W which is needed to produce protein Y. Operon X is controlled by specific proteins which can regulate the amount of transcription. A repressor will attach to operon X and reduce transcription if it is not necessary at a given time. The repressor will be removed in the presence of protein W by becoming attached to a protein W molecule. Meanwhile an activator protein will attach upstream to the promoter and signal RNA polymerase to begin transcription of operon X if transcription is needed in order to produce protein Y.
