What happens to the monomer during the synthesis of a polymer?

The monomers are bonded together to create the polymer(aka synthesis). More specifically sometimes they lose a water molecule in order to bond in a process called dehydration synthesis(that info is from IB Bio so I’m not sure how specific you need to be)
