Based on the results of earlier studies, Coleman hypothesized that the ob (the wild-type) gene codes for an appetite-suppressing hormone whose production increases as the amount of adipose (fat) tissue increases. He also hypothesized that the db (the wild-type) gene codes for the receptor for the appetite-suppressing hormone. Coleman, therefore, hypothesized that mutations to the genes affect the mice in the ways.
