For this experiment, we need the following: 1. Stock plants
2. Small pots
3. Sterile potting soil or medium
4. Rooting compound
5. Pot labels
6. Pruners or knives

First we will take two stem cuttings, 8-10 cm long, from one of the stock plants, cutting it at an angle.
We need to remove the lowest set of leaves from both stems, and then will dip the end of one stem into the rooting gel.
We plant both cuttings into clean potting soil, labeling one with “stem cutting – rooting gel”, and the other “stem cutting – no rooting gel”.
We then take two leaf cutting, cut close to the soil line.
We dip the end of one of the leaves into the rooting gel.
We then plant both leaves into clean potting soil, labeling one with “leaf cutting – rooting gel”, and the other “leaf cutting – no rooting gel”.
After several days, we can see how the roots can grow again and propagate the plants. Using the rooting gel helps speed the process, but now all four can grow into new plants.
Results/Questions

Which type of cutting developed the roots first? Did any of your plants not develop roots if so which ones?
Did the addition of rooting compound make any difference in the time it took to develop roots? Did it make any difference in the length of the roots produced?
Based on your research what are 3 reasons plants are propagated asexually?
What was the purpose of applying the rooting medium? Why was it applied to only one of each set and not to all of the plants?
List 3 to 4 environmental factors that may have helped or hindered your plants from developing roots.
Plants are not the only organisms that are able to reproduce asexually. Research at least 5 other organisms that can reproduce asexually. Identify what kingdom the organism belongs to and what it’s method of asexual reproduction is, and if it can also reproduce sexually.
What are the disadvantages to asexual reproduction and why is this disadvantage not true for sexual reproduction?
