Shingles is a condition characterized by pain, discoloration of the skin, and eruption of skin blisters along a sensory nerve. It is caused by the herpes zoster virus, the same virus that causes chicken pox. The herpes virus retreats into sensory neurons after chicken pox and remains dormant in the of the spinal cord until it is activated and causes a shingles outbreak.
