when seeds germinate or sprout, they are developing into new plants. each type of plant requires specific environmental conditions to trigger the seed to grow. this is usually determined by how deep the seed is planted, water availability, and temperature. when water is plentiful, the seed takes in water and swells. this process is called imbibition.
