The cell membrane is  a structure of a cell that is made up of a lipid bilayer with embedded proteins. it regulates the movement of materials in and out of the cell since it is semipermeable (allows only selected materials in or out). When substances pass through the cell, this process is called cellular transport. Cellular transport includes passive and active transport such that passive transport does not require energy whereas active transport requires energy for it to take place.
