The breathing technique that should be avoided in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is diaphragmatic breathing. Diaphragmatic breathing is observed as the rise and fall of the abdomen instead of the chest. This should be avoided as this increases the work of breathing. 

Breathing techniques that can be employed include yoga and pursed-lip breathing.
