Ok just Tell the boss you need their wisdom and support as the task assigned cannot be completed, and provide the reasons as to why you cannot do it.

When I was in management, I far preferred that my staff approached me early in the project to express any concerns, instead of at the deadline when they were being relied on to complete their task, along with the tasks assigned to others.

I used the “One-minute Manager” approach from the book of the same name. I would lay out the task with the expected results, discuss the support material and staff available to them and then give three options…have them do it all on their own, complete the task with some hand-holding, or accept the task as a learning experience with heavy support from others to bring it to completion. That decision was made by the staff member and not by me. Someones the ego of the worker bypassed their good sense and they would take on tasks by themselves that they were unable to complete due to many issues, including lack of experience or education. Because their pride would not allow them to come to me, the task was either poorly performed or a downright disaster.
