Bill improperly takes jewels worth $75,000 from Bob. Bob sues Bill in civil court to recover the jewels from Bill. Bob wins the jewels back in the civil lawsuit and Bill has to give them back. The FBI quickly discovers what Bill did and brings federal criminal charges against Bill for interstate theft. Bill defends against the charge claiming the criminal charge is double jeopardy. Bill argues that he cannot be sued civilly for the jewels' value by Bob and also be charged criminally for the theft because that is being punished twice for only one act and is unfair. The Statement: This is double jeopardy, and the criminal charge cannot be prosecuted against Bill.
