How are the elements organized with the columns of 1 or 1a?

They are organized in a “group”. That’s what we call the vertical columns in the periodic table. All of the elements in group 1/1A are alkali metals (except for hydrogen). They are extremely reactive! Elements in the same group also have the same number of valence electrons (same number of electrons in their outermost shell).
