An ion with unequal number of protons and electrons haves a name. A name depends on whether there are more protons than electrons (CATION) or if there are more electrons than protons (ANION).

Both models are effective because they show the valence electrons, and these valence electrons indicate the reactivity of an element.

Neither model is able to show the reactivity of potassium.
