Liquid extraction is an operation used to separate the components of a liquid mixture of two or more species. in the simplest case, the mixture contains two components: a solute (a) and a liquid solvent (b). the mixture is contacted in an agitated vessel with a second liquid solvent (c) that has two key properties: a dissolves in it, and b is immiscible or nearly immiscible with it. some of the a transfers from b to c, and then the b-rich phase (raffinate) and the c-rich phase (extract) separate from each other ina settling tank. if the raffinate is then contacted with fresh c in another stage, more a will be transferred from it. this process can be repeated until essentially all of the a has been extracted from the b. here, acetic acid (a) is extracted from a mixture of acetic acid (11.5 wt%) and water (b 88.5 wt%) at a mass flow rate of 400 g/min, into pure 1-hexanol (c), a liquid immiscible with water. the extract stream contains 9.6 wt% acetic acid and the remainder 1-hexanol, while the raffinate stream consists of 0.5 wt% acetic acid and remainder water (a) draw and label a flowchart of the process with known and unknown variables. (10 points) (b) do a degree of freedom analysis. (10 points) (c) find the mass flowrates of the 1-hexanol feed, the extract and raffinate streams. (20 points) (d) acetic acid is relatively difficult to separate completely from water by distillation and relatively easy to separate from 1-hexanol by distillation. sketch a flowchart of a two-unit process that might be used to recov mixture. (10 points) over nearly pure acetic acid from an acetic acid-water
