Atoms are made up of three kinds of smaller particles, called protons (which are positively charged), neutrons (which have no charge) and electrons (which are negatively charged). The protons and neutrons are heavier, and stay in the middle of the atom

There are three fundamental particles in atoms: protons, electrons and neutrons. The nucleus (center) of the atom contains the protons (positive loads) and neutrons (neutral loads). Electron shells are called the 'outermost regions' of the atom and contain the electrons (negative loads). Atoms have unique properties depending on how many of their basic particles are organized.
