Adischarge of warm water from a coastal power plant is located at 80 m depth. the sea is assumed to be well mixed and quiescent. the warm water discharges upwards at a velocity of 2.0 m/s and the exit diameter of the discharge outlet is 1 m. the velocity is initially uniform across the outlet. the initial density step is 1 kg/m3.

a. estimate the maximum concentration of a tracer at a depth of 20 m if the initial concentration is 1 kg/m3 .
b. a monitoring station is set up at 20 m depth and 5 m off the vertical axis of the discharge. what is the expected mean concentration of tracer at this location?
c. a new discharge pipe is being installed. should the diameter be increased or decreased to increase the dilution if the volume flowrate is to stay the same?
