An open supply tank of height 6.0 ft and cross-sectional area 10.0 ft2 is partially filled with glycerol (SG = 1.26). The glycerol occupies a height of 4.0 ft. A closed-ended mercury manometer is mounted above the bottom of the tank. The glycerol-mercury interface is 1.00 ft above the bottom of the tank. Assume that atmospheric pressure is 1 atm.
a)Calculate the weight of glycerol (in lbf) assuming the tank is located around sea level.
b)Calculate the height (h) registered by the mercury manometer (in mm).
c)Your boss suggests using water (SG = 1.0) in place of mercury (SG = 13.5) as the manometer fluid for safety reasons. What would be the major issue with using water given the density of glycerol (SG = 1.26)?
d)A Bourdon gauge (displays gauge pressure) is mounted on the bottom of the supply tank. What pressure would the gauge read (in psig)?
