As the concentration of a solution increases, its vapor pressure deceases. For a nonvolatile solute B in a liquid solvent A, the relationship between concentration and vapor pressure is expressed by Raoult’s Law. In a 2-component solution consisting of A & B, the mole fraction, X, of A is defined as XA = (mol A)/(mol A+B). In a solution of 2 volatile liquids, A&B, each contributes to the total VP above the soln. The total VP is sum of the partial pressures. Ptot = PA+PB= XAPA + XBPB where PA & PB are VP of pure A & B. a) A solution has 1.40 mol cyclohexane (P= 0.128 atm) & 2.40mol acetone (P=0.302 atm). What is the total VP? b) What mole fraction of the vapor above the solution is cyclohexane?
