Why does DNA need to be coiled?

If you took DNA and stretched it out, it's actually like thousands of feet long and it has to fit inside your cell on a microscopic level so it's tightly packed and folded back in on itself because it's the only way it would fit. In addition, it contains a lot of letters, 3 billion base pairs.
