When a hurricane strikes a coastal area, it brings a number of serious hazards. These hazards include heavy rains, high winds, a storm surge, and even tornadoes. Storm surge pushes seawater on shore during a hurricane, flooding towns near the coast. Heavy rains cause flooding in inland places as well. This picture was taken after Hurricane Ike drenched parts of Texas in 2008. High winds, storm surge, flooding and tornadoes cause damage to houses and cars that are in the path of a hurricane. Hurricanes are natural events that can impact the different spheres. Which of these correctly matches a hurricane effect with the sphere it impacts? All BUT ONE apply.

A) Plants (biosphere) draw water (hydrosphere) and nutrients from the soil (geosphere) and release water vapor into the air (atmosphere).

B) Energy from the sun is stored by plants (biosphere) which are eaten by humans and animals. Humans use some of this energy farming (geosphere and biosphere) the land.

C) Humans (biosphere) use both farm machinery (manufactured from geosphere materials) to irrigate the fields and the atmosphere brings precipitation (hydrosphere) to water the plants.

D) When humans or animals (biosphere) eat the plants being grown, they acquire the energy originally captured by the plants. Humans expend some of this energy arranging bricks and wood (geosphere and cryosphere) into buildings in the Arctic.
