In the diagram below, particles of the substance are moving from the liquid phase to the gas phase at the same rate as they move from the gas phase to the liquid phase.
A number of balls are loosely packed in the bottom of a container, beneath a line across the middle of the container, and a few balls above the line. 2 balls below the line have arrows pointing upward through the centerline; a few of the balls above the line have arrows pointing down through the centerline.
