Employees who work with hazardous energy must be trained in energy control procedures, also known as Lockout/Tagout. Measures must be taken to disable machinery to prevent the release of hazardous energy during maintenance procedures.

Lockout or tagout device removal: Each lockout or tagout device must be removed from the energy-isolating device by the employee who applied the device [29 CFR 1910.147(e)(3)].

A lockout/tagout procedure should include the following six steps:

Preparation.

Shutdown.

Isolation.

Lockout/tagout.

Stored energy check.

Isolation verification.
