O Prêmio Nobel de Química 2019 foi para três cientistas, Akira Yoshino (japonês), John B. Goodenough (estadunidense) e M. Stanley Wittingham (britânico), pelo estudo e desenvolvimento de baterias de íons lítio. As baterias estudadas utilizam íons lítio presentes no eletrólito na forma de sais dissolvidos em solventes não aquosos como eletrodo. As células de íons lítio mais comuns têm um ânodo de carbono (C) e um cátodo de óxido de cobalto e lítio (LiCoO2). Durante o processo de descarga, os íons lítio migram desde o interior do material que compõe o ânodo até dentro do material do cátodo, conforme ilustrado na figura.
