This was discovered without gravitational waves which is usually used in science.

VLBA was responsible for tracking radio-bright jets of material flowing out of Cygnus X-1’s black hole for six days straight. Cygnus X-1 is around 7,200 light-years from Earth, which contradicts the last estimate of 6,000.
