Brine : It is the solution of sodium chloride and water. In the process of electrolysis, new chemicals are formed by using the electric current.

In the electrolysis of brine, hydrogen gas produces at the cathode which is a negative electrode and chlorine gas produces as the anode which is a positive electrode and the sodium hydroxide remains dissolved in the solution.

The two half-reaction equation are :

Reduction : $2H^++2e^-\rightarrow H_2$

Oxidation : $2Cl^-+2e^-\rightarrow Cl_2$

The balanced chemical reaction will be,

$2NaCl(s)+2H_2O(aq)\rightarrow 2Na^+(aq)+2OH^-(aq)+Cl_2(g)+H_2(g)$
