Basically ionic is when an electron is completely transferred to another element. Covalent is when two elements share an electron, no transfer of electrons is taking place 

A covalent bond is when there is a sharing of electrons between the atoms. Also, this type of bond is composed of nonmetal elements.

Ionic is when is not sharing of electrons between the atoms. one atom will give electron(s) away and the other one takes it, so it is like a give and take type of bond. Also, this type of bond is composed of a metal and nonmetal element.
