Mrs. V’s students wanted to learn about how moths were attracted to light. They gathered battery-powered LED lights in different colors, making sure they were the
same size and brightness. Of all the colors, they thought the moths would be most
attracted to the yellow light. The students found an area in a wide field. They
wanted all of the lights to be at the same height. So, they decided to use meter sticks
hammered into the ground. They placed these 100 meters apart and attached the
lights to the top.
Near each light, a strip of sticky bug-catching tape was posted. Each night, at 8:00PM
the lights were turned on for 20 minutes. After the lights were turned off, the sticky
tape was collected, and the number of moths stuck to the paper were recorded. The
students repeated their process each night for a full week.
