Kerosene is the fuel used at Space X that combusts with oxygen to produce the thrust needed to propel the rockets into space. Elon Musk is trying to figure out how much kerosene he needs to get to Mars. He already knows the total amount of energy he needs to get the spaceship to Mars based on its mass and he knows the standard heat of formations of the reactants and products.
