Carbon monoxide and hydrogen are reacted to form methanol in the reaction below. The single-pass conversion of CO in the reactor is only 18%, so the product is fed into a separator. Pure methanol leaves the separator as product and the remaining components are recycled to the reactor feed. The feed to the process contains 67.3mol% H2, 32.5 mol%CO and 0.2 mol% N2. The nitrogen is an impurity and the process is controlled such that the stream leaving the separator for recycle is kept at 3.2mol% N2. The process is continuous and steady state and 300 mol/hr are fed to the process. CO+ H2 → CH3OH

Required:
a. Draw and label a flowsheet of the process.
b. Why is a purge stream needed in the process? What components are in the purge stream?
c. Determine the flow rate of methanol product and the purge stream.
d. What is the extent of reaction of the reactor?
e. Determine the composition and flow rate of the recycle stream.
