BIG IDEA: • The crust is part of the lithosphere where earthquakes originate. It has segments called tectonic plates or lithospheric plates. • Earthquake is a sudden shaking or movement of the crust. The shaking or vibration of the ground is due to the sudden release of energy fromthe rocksthat fracture the lithosphere. • Lithospheric plates are on top of the asthenosphere that exhibits plastic property. • The plates that are moving in different directions driven by convectionmovements. • Earthquakes occur when the plates move toward each other, move away from each other, or slide past each other. • Earthquake also occur in weak areas of the crust called faults. The movements along the faults release tremendous amounts of energy that causes the most of the earthquakes we experience. • There are three different types of faults: normal faults, reverse faults, and transform faults.
