How does gibbs free energy predict spontaneity?

When deltaG, the Gibbs free energy, is negative, the process is spontaneous and will proceed in the forward direction. Chemical substances naturally attempt to minimize their total Gibbs free energy, so if the products have lower free energy than the reactants, the reactants spontaneously react to form the lower-free energy products.
