Ionic compounds are compounds in which atom of different elements transfer electron(s). One atom donate electron and it is usually called the donor while the other atom receives the electron and it is called the receiver. Ionic compounds contain a positively charged ion known as cations and a negatively charged ion known as anions. Most metallic elements possess a positively charge ion while most non metallic elements possess a negatively charge ion. This is why ionic compound are composed of metallic and non metallic elements.

When ionic compounds dissolves in water they tend to form electrolytes due to the dissociated charges(cations and anions). In this form they are able to conduct electricity.

Ionic compounds are mostly solid and are strongly bonded . To break this bond requires high melting and boiling point. Ionic compounds have a high melting point.
